Coronary Heart Disease

coronary heart disease 01

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a narrowing of the blood vessels that supply blood, oxygen and nutrients to your heart. CHD is also called coronary artery disease (CAD).

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women.

Coronary heart disease is caused by the buildup of cholesterol-containing deposits (plaques) in the arteries to your heart. As a result, blood flow to the heart can slow down or stop.

Symptoms:

You may have symptoms when your heart is not getting enough blood or oxygen, including:

1. Chest pain (angina). Chest pain is usually triggered by physical or emotional stress. You may feel heavy or like someone is squeezing your heart. You may feel it under your breast bone (sternum), but also could be in your neck, shoulder, arms, stomach, or upper back.

2. Shortness of breath and fatigue with activity (exertion).

3. Heart attack. The classic signs of a heart attack include crushing pressure in your chest and pain in your shoulder or arm, sometimes with shortness of breath and sweating.

Treatment:

Always follow your doctor”s directions closely, your doctor may give you one or more medicines to control CHD (including control your high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol). Your doctor”s directions may include:

  • Quit smoking
  • Eat healthy foods
  • Exercise regularly
  • Take nutritional supplements
  • ACE inhibitors to control your blood pressure
  • Aspirin to help prevent blood from forming clots
  • Beta-blockers to lower heart rate, blood pressure
  • Calcium channel blockers to relax arteries
  • Nitroglycerin to stop chest pain and improve blood flow to the heart
  • Statins to lower cholesterol|||»Angioplasty and stent placement
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Immediately contact your doctor:

Immediately contact your doctor, call 911, or go to the emergency room if you have:

  • Chest pain or Angina
  • Shortness of breath
  • Symptoms of a heart attack
